A community support association for families standing together in hardship.

It is well understood that when an unavoidable event such as death occurs whether from natural or accidental causes it places immense emotional and financial stress on the entire family. This burden is often even heavier for those living abroad, far from their loved ones and community support systems.

Although no one can replace the life that has been lost, providing a proper and dignified burial, along with an opportunity for family and friends to gather and pay their respects, brings comfort and peace of mind. However, such arrangements can only be carried out smoothly when there has been sufficient prior preparation in accordance with cultural and social norms.

Semayi Idir was established to respond to this need by standing with families during their most difficult moments organizing funeral arrangements, providing financial assistance, and supporting the repatriation of the deceased when necessary.

Beyond bereavement support, Semayi Idir actively works to strengthen the wellbeing of its members and the wider community. The association provides case management services by guiding families to appropriate social and community resources and ensuring continuous support. It promotes family health and wellbeing through education and awareness activities that address parenting, mental health, and healthy living.

Semayi Idir also invests in youth development, supporting young people through mentorship, education guidance, and life-skills development so they can become responsible and capable members of society. In addition, the association provides support for elders, including community connection, assistance with daily needs, and programs that reduce isolation and strengthen dignity.

Through community advocacy and engagement, Semayi Idir encourages unity, participation, and mutual support among members both locally and in the diaspora. During times of urgent need, the association also provides emergency assistance to help families facing sudden financial or social hardship.

Semayi Idir is a non-discriminatory association open to all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia who share values of solidarity, compassion, and mutual support regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or political belief.

At its heart, Semayi Idir represents an Ethiopian cultural system of social protection a community where members stand together in times of grief, support one another in times of need, and build a stronger, more caring society for the future.
